Christopher Lewis Survey Exhibition 1980-2015

Depot II Gallery

February 24, 2015 - March 7, 2015

andrew painting no 1
A not to be missed mid-career survey exhibition of the acclaimed Sydney artist Christopher Lewis, spanning three decades.
This is the first time these paintings have ever been seen together, thanks to the generosity of collectors who have loaned their works for this visual celebration of Sydney for the Mardi Gras Festival 2015. The artist’s hard edged urban realist paintings have been described as “having the cool penetration of a scalpel”. Important early paintings together with recent work describe and celebrate the urban landscape of Sydney and life lived within it. The exhibition includes the two large urban realist landscape paintings of Kings Cross with the solitary figure of the artist’s friend, the actor Andrew McFarlane from the early 1980s, then moves through the artist’s hyper realist period of the mid 1980s which peaks with the breathtaking paintings of midtown Manhattan inspired by the artists first trip to New York. Recent paintings of Elizabeth Bay and Surry Hills describe a landscape where the harbour, the lane ways, rooftops and deep shadows create a visual poetry of enchanting stillness.
The exhibition will also launch the artists first signed limited edition prints in collaboration with Berkeley Editions.
This exhibition is an official event of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival 2015.
